OUR JOURNEY/हमारी यात्रा
Responding to a call for help, Kulshreshthas in USA collected $3,100 in 2010 and sent to Kulshreshtha Kalyan Samiti (KKS) which is a grass route organization helping needy Kulshreshtha families in India.
Surprisingly, many hardworking families are living off less than Rs. 5,000 (Under $75) a month. Don’t be shocked. It is the truth.
In 2011 five families in USA decided to do something about it. We started Emergency Relief Fund, a New Jersey based nonprofit tax-exempt corporation. The founding families made an annual commitment of Rs50,000 each year for five years. It seemed little but better than doing nothing.
Very soon an extremely painful newspaper story was brought to our attention. A poor Kulshreshtha family of five was facing starvation in Morena, India. All members were either totally or partially blind. Food was the main problem. We sent the requested money for 9 months of food supply till something long term is figured out. It was only Rs.26,000.
In a home based business, a couple delivered lunch to working people. An additional investment of Rs.30,000 in boxes and equipment would double their profit. To help such self-employed families who can use small interest free short term loans we sent KKS over Rs 300,000 in 2014. They are re-cycling this money to reach out to more and more families.
In the year 2014, IRS reviewed the corporation and formally granted us the status of a tax-exempt organization under section 501(C)(3) of the IRS Code. We are now verifiable on the IRS web site and can get tax exempt donations from individuals, corporations or even matching contributions from the employers.
In 2015 we conducted Renaissance Raffle Nite, a community fund raiser, the first of its kind, and raised $2,200 (Over Rs. 150,000) just by that event. We intend to conduct more of such events every year.
While helping needy Kulshreshtha Families on recommendations from India based non- profit organizations, for the first time in 2017, ERF took notice of need from a WhatsApp group. A quick decision to send Rs.50,000 to the needy family in India was taken. Unfortunately the person died and the self-respecting family did not want any more help.
We have so far helped several families facing starvation, families struggling with cancer, lung failures, accidents and a lot more. We are one of the top contributors to the KKS in India.
We cherish our journey and will be glad if you become a part of it.
